Beyond “Gangnam Style”: Does PSY Still Make Music?
It is hard to talk about 2010s pop culture without instantly picturing the iconic horse-riding dance, the electric blue suit, and the infectious beat of “Gangnam Style”. When South Korean singer and songwriter PSY (Park Jae-sang) took the world by storm in 2012, he shattered global barriers, becoming the first-ever YouTube video to hit one billion views.
Over a decade later, a common question lingers among casual fans: Does PSY still make music?
The short answer is a resounding yes. PSY never truly stopped creating, though his role in the music industry has evolved significantly.
The Evolution of PSY’s Career
While the Western world largely knows PSY as a global viral sensation, in South Korea, he was already a massive, boundary-pushing hip-hop artist and provocateur for over a decade before “Gangnam Style” dropped. Following his unprecedented international peak—and subsequent follow-up singles like “Gentleman” and “Hangover” (featuring Snoop Dogg)—PSY gradually shifted his focus.
Instead of chasing another lightning-in-a-bottle Western crossover, he returned to his roots, releasing studio albums like Chiljip PSY-da (2015) and 4X2=8 (2017) under his longtime home, YG Entertainment.
Founding P Nation: Mogul and Mentor
In 2019, PSY entered a brand-new era by establishing his own independent entertainment agency, P Nation. Stepping into the role of a chief executive and music mogul, PSY turned his attention toward nurturing the next generation of K-pop and hip-hop talent. Under his leadership, P Nation has housed and developed prominent stars like Crush, Heize, Hwasa, and the boy band TNX.
Recent Releases: Psy 9th and “That That”
PSY proved he still commands the global stage when he released his ninth studio album, Psy 9th, in April 2022.
